Pye Residence

The design challenge was to transform this early 1960's Colonial ranch home into a California contemporary style home with a classic English foundation and contemporary interior to accommodate the client's art collection. Design challenges included low ceiling heights throughout, distinguishing the front approach to the house, a drab façade and overgrown landscaping and the compartmentalization of the living room, dining room and entry. The ultimate solution was to remove the entire roof and provide some architectural relief through the design of gable fronts along with increasing the sizes of window and door openings. The entry, living and dining room were completely opened up by removing the divisive walls to create a more inviting combination living/dining area that better related to the front entry, as well as having more natural light. The end result was an elegant and understand design that blended in with the existing site and surroundings as if it had always been there.
